The AAIN Semester Abroad Program offers American university students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Moroccan culture and academia for an entire semester. Set in the historic cities of Rabat and Meknes, the program combines rigorous academic studies with cultural immersion, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region’s dynamics. This program is tailored for students who aim to expand their global perspective, enhance intercultural competencies, and engage in a transformative educational experience.
Academic Curriculum
Students will enroll in a variety of courses focusing on the Arabic language (MSA & MENA dialects) North African history, Islamic studies, and MENA region geopolitics. Additional specialized electives such as Moroccan literature, art, and society further enrich the academic offerings. All courses are taught by experienced faculty from leading Moroccan universities in partnership with visiting professors from the U.S.

Cultural Immersion
Cultural immersion is a cornerstone of the program. Students will participate in:
Field Trips (which will include site visits and guided tours): – Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fez, & Merzouga
Homestays with Moroccan families, offering firsthand experience of daily life and customs.
Workshops on Moroccan cooking and crafts and our signature mock Moroccan wedding
Professional Development
The program includes seminars and guest lectures from prominent MENA region experts, diplomats, and local government officials. Students will also have the opportunity to intern at local NGOs, educational institutions, or businesses, providing practical experience relevant to their fields of study.
Location and Housing
The program is split between Rabat, the political capital, and Meknes, a city known for its imperial history and vibrant culture. Students will reside in homestays with host families while in Meknes and Rabat to deepen their cultural immersion.

Pre-departure orientation covering cultural norms, safety guidelines, and logistical preparations
On-site orientation upon arrival in Morocco.

Regular health and safety updates, complying with both U.S. and Moroccan regulations.
Eligibility and Application
The program is open to undergraduate students from U.S. universities or independent students with an interest in MENA studies. Proficiency in Arabic is not required, but students are encouraged to take introductory Arabic courses during the program.
